Support projects in Bhutan, situated in the Eastern Himalayas, is known for its beautiful landscapes, rich biodiversity, and unique cultural focus on Gross National Happiness rather than just economic growth.
Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan, is known for its stunning landscapes and the iconic Punakha Dzong, a historic fortress that plays a significant role in the country’s culture. Despite its natural beauty and tourism potential, Punakha faces socio-economic challenges such as limited infrastructure, reliance on agriculture, and seasonal variations in crop yields. These factors can hinder economic growth and create difficulties for local communities, particularly in terms of access to education and healthcare. Jigme Dorji National Park, the second largest in Bhutan at 431,600 hectares, is located in the northwestern part of the country and is rich in cultural and biological diversity. It serves as a vital habitat for threatened species like tigers, snow leopards, dholes, and red pandas, thanks to its wide altitudinal range and four major ecosystems. The park is also home to many cultural and historic sites, with surrounding communities that rely on farming and livestock herding.
Our partnership leverages the strengths of the two organisations, with the local &Beyond team directly supporting the work of our local project team and our community partners. We believe that conservation is best achieved by ensuring that the benefits of conservation are shared by the communities that are stewards of Asia’s conservation landscapes and seascapes. Our work has a a focus on future foundations and tomorrow’s leaders.
