The founder of the creche, Ms Agrineth Thela, was driven to find a solution for the many vulnerable children left to fend for themselves at home while their parents worked or searched for income. Very young children were often left to feed and bathe themselves without any adult supervision. Agrineth utilized her small RDP home as the first classroom of Silethukukhanya Creche, enrolling children aged 1 to 5 and providing meals from her modest income.
The creche provides a safe and nurturing environment for them, alleviating the burden of childcare from working parents and allowing them to work without the constant worry about their children’s well-being. Some of the children at the center are the offspring of local high school students. By caring for these young children during the day, the creche enables their parents to attend school without the added responsibility of childcare. The creche offers education that includes life skills, numeracy, and language, as well as nutritional support
