Mozambique is a country in southeast Africa with a population of over 27 million people. The country is particularly susceptible to floods, droughts and earthquakes, which are a major hindrance to development. Wild Impact has supported the Government and Islanders efforts to establish a clinic on Benguerra, as well as funding the construction of accommodation for medical staff to live on the island. Benguerra Island is a focal point for marine conservation activities including Marine Conservation lessons to share knowledge on why and how to protect the marine environment.
When water has to be obtained from a community point, the role of collecting water falls primarily to women and children. 25L buckets are commonly used, carried on the head. This causes premature ageing of the spine. For women, who are the primary small-scale farmers, time is lost for household tasks, growing crops and pursuing economic opportunities. For the 3 million children collecting water in sub-Saharan Africa every day, their education is compromised as well as their time to play – a crucial part of childhood development. They are also exposed to harmful situations as they walk long distances from home.
To alleviate many of the struggles caused by poor access to water, the innovative Hippo Roller was created. A Hippo Roller is able to transport 90 L of water in one journey without any requirement for carrying. The handle of the roller enables the robust barrel to be pushed or pulled over even the roughest rural terrain. The benefits are immense. Transporting five times the volume of water in one journey results in more time for education, economic prosperity and improved health. With two mechanisms for pouring water from the barrel, the Hippo Roller is not only practical for decanting water for cooking and cleaning, it is also a cost effective tool for irrigation on small farms – improving crop production and increasing income potential. The lid has a tight seal which keeps the stored water free of contaminants.
The durability of the Hippo Roller (5-7 years) reduces plastic waste, eliminating the need for multiple buckets with short shelf lives, and the quality of the plastic leads to the roller being transformed for other household uses once its life as a hippo roller has expired.
