Wild Impact with the help of the Government and the community have worked together to help establish the school, however because of the popularity of the school there is a challenge of overcrowding. The extra curriculum activities at the school include athletics track and field for both girls and boys, soccer for the boys and netball for the girls. Given the regional importance of Anthony Mtaka Secondary School, Wild Impact and &Beyond are committed to supporting a progressive improvement in the school facilities, with the overall intention of supporting its development into a quality secondary education facility. The priority projects identified through consultation with the school leadership and parents are: The establishment of girls dormitory, the construction of two new ablution blocks and the construction of a 2-in-1 teacher accommodation unit.
The school services a large area, with scholars walking up to 19 km each day in their commute to-and-from school. The school has recently received support for the addition of multiple classrooms, significantly reducing crowding. However, it still provides a far-from-ideal learning environment for scholars, with notable challenges being the number and quality of ablution facilities, and the lack of boarding facilities, teacher accommodation and a school administration area.
By providing boarding facilities at the school, it removes the need to travel long distances, as well as creating an environment conducive to study. On site the students could also be guaranteed regular hot meals and time to complete homework with access to teachers and student mentors.
Anthony Mtaka Secondary School situated in the Lukungu community, the school was established in 2018 to address the lack of secondary schools in the area, as children were expected to walk 20 km to and from school to the nearest school in Lamadi. There are around 4 800 residents in the community. There are very few employment opportunities and that education levels in the community are low. As such, most community members surviving through a mix of small-scale agriculture, fishing and micro-entrepreneurial activity.
