Zanzibar is semi-autonomous state within Tanzania with a population of approx. 1.8 million people. Unguja, commonly known as Zanzibar Island, is the largest, most populated island in the Zanzibar Archipelago. Tourism is the major economic contributor and aside from the tourist industry, employment opportunities are few, particularly for those living outside of the capital, Stone Town. Most inhabitants engage in small-scale fishing and subsistence farming to earn a living.
Matemwe is a coastal village on the north-easten coast of Zanzibar, known for its magnificent beaches and coral reefs , which make it a popular tourist destination. The economy of the Matemwe community revolves around fishing, seaweed farming and tourism. The community is situated in the Mnemba Island seascape.
