The government of Zanzibar uses several approaches in the conservation of biodiversity. These include using areas like the Jozani National Park on Unguja (Zanzibar) Island for small wildlife populations and raising community awareness on the conservation of wildlife through education on flagship species like the Aders’ duiker (Cephalophus adersi).
While this vulnerable species is conserved by Zanzibar law, in view of their high risk level due to habitat loss and hunting, the government has increased conservation efforts to protect them. The creation of an Aders’ duiker species recovery plan will include a number of strategies to protect and conserve this rare animal for present and future generations.
