In 2018, Wild Impact started working with the community of Belfast village (also known as eMakhazeni) and Hoxani Tribal Authority leadership. Situated in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, Belfast is home to about 12,000 people, with unemployment affecting 73% of residents. Employment opportunities are limited. Many rely on seasonal farm work or nearby lodge and game reserve positions, while others must seek opportunities in distant cities, leaving families behind. Wild Impact has worked collaboratively with the community and leadership to enhance educational facilities, provide opportunities for tertiary education, and foster local entrepreneurship. Wild Impact’s goal is to build sustainable livelihoods that link economic opportunity with the conservation of Greater Kruger’s vital ecosystem.
