Tanzania’s 1 476 300 ha Serengeti National Park was established in 1940 and is best known for the annual migration of over 1 500 000 White Bearded Gnu and 250 000 Plain Zebra within the greater Serengeti and Masai Mara landscape. Wild Impact has partnered with three communities along the western boundary of the park, namely the Lukungu, Mwabayanda and Mbirikiri communities, home to over 12 000 residents. These are isolated and poorly developed rural communities. Livelihoods are largely natural resource based, including fishing, agriculture and livestock. All 3 communities are directly impacted by wildlife, mainly elephant and lion.
Wild Impact has recently been able to provide support for the development of Mwamalole Pre-school, Lukungu and Mbirikiri Primary School, and Anton Mtaka Secondary School. Whilst continuing to support improvements at these education facilities, it is also working towards supporting the development of Lukungu Clinic and implementing Cameras for Conservation, and food and water security projects in these communities.
