Located as part of the Lamadi Ward, Busega District, Tanzania, between the eastern shore of Lake Victoria and the western boundary of Serengeti National Park, Anthony Mtaka Secondary School currently has an enrolment of 1,380 students across forms 1–4. The students are aged from 12 to 16. The school services a large area, with scholars walking up to 19 km each day in their commute to-and-from school. The school has recently received support for the addition of multiple classrooms, significantly reducing crowding. However, it still provides a far-from-ideal learning environment for scholars, with notable challenges being the number and quality of ablution facilities, and the lack of boarding facilities, teacher accommodation and a school administration area.
Unfortunately, the combination of scholar commute time and limited Educational facilities has translated into poor attendance, high dropout rates and an overall poor academic performance in both internal and external exams., with less than 30% of students currently passing their Form IV National Exam. There is also a high rate of teenage pregnancy, with girls dropping out to get married at a young age. Given the regional importance of Anthony Mtaka Secondary School, Wild Impact and &Beyond are committed to supporting a progressive improvement in the school facilities, with the overall intention of supporting its development into a quality secondary Education facility.
