In the heart of Thlavekisa lies a small yet spirited community shaped by resilience and shared purpose.
This story and the vision for change it represents has been made possible through the generosity of the Bilton family, whose support helped transform a community’s determination into reality. For this community, the path to education has never been simple. For years, children finishing at Muchuchi Primary School faced a harsh choice: walk seven kilometers to overcrowded schools in neighboring communities or give up on secondary education altogether. With no transport and dangerous terrain along the way, many never made it through.
Change began with parents and community members who were no longer willing to see their children risk their safety for an education. Land was secured and leaders began asking for support.
They reached out to the Department of Education, Wild Impact and &Beyond for resources, technical support and financial backing. The true turning point came when the Bilton family travelled to &Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve, heard the story of the neighbouring community and stepped in, making a commitment to enable the community to go beyond planning and start building a future.
By the end of 2013, Bilton Secondary School was no longer just an idea. With the backing of the Bilton Family and Department of Education, seven classrooms, two ablution blocks, an administration block, a borehole and secure fencing, created the first safe and accessible secondary school for the children of Tlhavekisa.
The results were felt quickly. In 2018, the first matric class graduated with 128 students passing.
Enrolment grew steadily, from 150 matric learners in 2018 to 424 in 2022. Beyond the numbers, the school built a reputation for quality. Smaller class sizes allowed teachers to focus more on individual learners, creating stronger relationships that encouraged trust, collaboration and pride across the community. To date, 1 332 students have completed their matric studies at Bilton High, with a 92% pass rate and 56% earning university entrance
Bilton High’s development has always been about more than buildings. Each addition addressed real needs: ablutions that ensure dignity and health, an administration block that supports daily operations and gives teachers a dedicated space to prepare and collaborate.
In 2022, the school expanded again with a double classroom block, a fully equipped science laboratory and new ablution facilities. These spaces allow for collaboration, critical thinking and hands-on learning, building the skills young people need to supporting learners as they identify their passions and explore career pathways aligned with the jobs of the future
This is a story of vision meeting commitment, of a community that rallied for its children, of partners who came together and of one family whose belief in education changed thousands of lives.
Thanks to the combined efforts of the community, the Department of Education, Wild Impact, &Beyond and above all the Bilton family. Bilton High School continues to stand as a promise: that every child in Tlhavekisa deserves the chance to learn, grow and thrive.
