The Tara Getty Secondary School, made possible through the vision and generosity of the Tara Getty Foundation, stands as a living legacy of what can be achieved when purpose meets commitment.
A Vision Takes Root – Phase 1 (2020)
The journey began with a dream: to provide quality secondary education to young people in a remote and underserved region. In 2020, Phase 1 of the Tara Getty Secondary School broke ground (quite literally) with the construction of the first classroom block. This was more than just bricks and mortar. It was the start of a movement toward educational equity and empowerment.Phase 1 infrastructure included 4 classrooms, a central administration block, 2 blocks of scholar ablutions with 6 toilets in each block, and a 4-in-1 teachers’ accommodation block. The school formally opened its doors to the first 99 Form 1 students in January 2021.The school formally opened its doors to the first 99 Form 1 students in January 2021.The Tanzania Department of Education committed teachers and learning resources.
Growing Foundations – Phase 2 (2021)
With momentum building, Phase 2 brought critical infrastructure to support a thriving learning environment. The 4 additional classrooms (2 partially funded by the department) and teachers accommodation were completed, giving teachers and students a strong sense of structure and permanence. At this stage the Government also allocated additional teachers – showing their commitment to the schools development. This allowed the school to expand to include a new grade, Form II, bringing the enrollment up to 158 students. The Tara Getty Foundation’s support ensured that these weren’t just buildings — they were homes for knowledge and growth.
A Full Campus Emerges – Phase 3 (2022)
By 2022, the school blossomed into a fully functional educational hub. This phase included a kitchen and dining hall and dormitories to enable the students to board and focus on their studies. Enrollment increased to 265 students and enabled the boarding of students as more families recognized the school as a beacon of opportunity. For girls especially, access to secondary education became a new reality, opening doors that had previously been closed.
Enhancing the Learning Environment – Phase 4 (2023–2024)
With Phase 4 now complete, the Tara Getty Secondary School has expanded its capacity and enriched the academic environment with new laboratories and a fully stocked library. These facilities are critical for science and research learning — key to developing the next generation of conservationists, community leaders, and change-makers. The school now offers Form I – IV education with 389 students now enrolled, with a near-equal gender balance, creating a dynamic, inclusive space for learning.
Looking Ahead – Phase 5 in Progress (2025)
Currently underway, Phase 5 focuses on sustainability and long-term impact. Plans include new staff accommodation, additional 2 classrooms, a media-library, fencing for accommodation and sports fields and building partnerships that will ensure the school continues to serve its community for generations. It’s a phase rooted in resilience — designed to not only maintain but grow the school’s role as an educational cornerstone. The school now also boasts an impressive vegetable garden, providing extra variety and nutrition to the school meals’.
