Sexaxa is a very small rural village in the Ngamiland District, 19 km northeast of Maun Airport, Botswana.
Close to the Thamalakane River, Sexaxa has an estimated population of 600-900 people and has no real infrastructure. The nearest larger village is Matlapana, roughly five kilometers away.
Children living in Sexaxa attend school in Matlapana. As school starts at 7:30 am, children from the age of six rise around 4:00 am and set off on a walk to school that takes them through bushy terrain and, for the last kilometre, along a dangerously busy tarred road. Often leaving home on empty stomachs, it is common for the Sexaxa children to arrive to class late, hungry, and tired. Not only this, accident and injury on route is a real concern for the parents of these children.
The children are further disadvantaged by being unable to attend after-school activities, such as extra revision sessions and sports, which would see them walking home after dark. Because of the location of the community, off road, a bus or public taxi is not an option, even if the families could afford it.
The overall impact has been below-average performance, inconsistent attendance, and increased drop-out rates from the children of Sexaxa.
The situation was brought to the attention of Wild Impact by the community, who were seeking support to raise funds for the construction of a school within the village. Through the generosity of donors, and working in partnership with the community, the government, and District Council, Wild Impact has been able to fulfill this request. To date, the construction of two classrooms, ablutions, kitchen, and fencing have been completed, with the Botswana government taking responsibility for providing the land, water, and electricity supply and salaried teachers.
With these two classrooms, the school will begin by enrolling Grades 1 and 2 students to relieve the strain of the commute on the youngest children in Sexaxa. Together with the other stakeholders we are committed to growing the infrastructure until this is a complete, fully functioning primary school.
For this reason, Sexaxa School infrastructure is our current ‘Star Project’ in Botswana.
