The only supply of water for people living in Emurutoto and neighbouring communities was a local stream, which was also accessed by cattle and other wildlife. The stream exposed many people in the community to water-borne diseases.
The community leadership of Emurutoto approached Wild Impact to assist with the desperate lack of clean water. The original plan for Emurutoto and its surrounding villages in the Maasai Mara was to sink a borehole. However, after drilling a depth of 220 metres, no water was found. After extensive consultation and investigation it was decided that a water pan system would be the water solution for these communities.
Through the generosity of donors, a dam which would act as a spring and rainwater catchment was developed, with capacity for 25,000 cubic metres of water. From here, a drinking trough for cattle was constructed. A drainage pipe was placed to draw water by gravity from the dam to a reservoir tank at a lower ground level where a filtration system made the water safe for consumption. A water tank was then constructed at the highest point in the area, from where pipes draw the treated water into four reserve tanks in conveniently located water collection points or ‘kiosks’ for people to access.:
One at shopping center in Kawai, one 1.5km on in Olchurai, one near the school at Emurutoto and one in Meyoki
