The Nyekweri Forest Conservation project began in September 2022, in close partnership with the Nyekweri Kimintet Community Forest Conservation Trust: 26 community land owners, committed to the conservation of this precious resource. Situated adjacent to the Masai Mara National Reserve, this indigenous forest is a key collaborative project with the partner communities of Emurutoto, Saparingo and Iltolish.
In addition to its ecological value, it is a refuge for the endangered giant ground pangolin and regional elephant who are known to choose the forest as a safe place to give birth. In April 2024, our Community & Conservation ranger team supported in the establishment of a fenced-off community tree nursery and seedling propogation hub which will support indigenous seedling growth and ultimately the regeneration of forest sections. This development included the construction of a storeroom, required equipment and the installation of two water tanks.
This rich, irreplaceable ecosystem is even more than a haven for biodiversity. Conservation of this habitat is the region’s lifeblood, as it provides essential water catchment services and maintains the fragile ecological balance.
