Ophansi Clinic is a public healthcare facility located in the Ubombo area of Jozini Rural, within the Umkhanyakude District Municipality of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Ophansi Clinic offers a range of primary healthcare services, including maternal and child health, immunizations, treatment of common illnesses, and health education. In 2008, the clinic underwent significant renovations to address structural issues and improve service delivery, with support from organisations like Wild Impact.
Future Foundations is dedicated to improving access to primary healthcare and education, directly aligning with Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and 4 (Quality Education). The brutal reality in Africa is that many rural communities simply do not have easy access to hospitals or local healthcare facilities and there is no denying the detrimental impact this has on the wellbeing of these communities.
Wild Impact has been working with communities and municipalities for three decades to increase access to a range of medical services. This includes building clinics and accommodation for healthcare workers; facilitating community-based care initiatives; and developing boreholes and dams for safe drinking water. Access to safe sanitation facilities also remains a major problem in poor rural communities and Wild Impact provides ablutions or Enviro-loos – hygienic but waterless ablutions – to schools, clinics and other community facilities. Our vision 2030 target is to ensure 80% of our partner community residents have access to quality primary healthcare.
Wild Impact in partnership with &Beyond started working with the KwaJobe Community in 1996. KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa’s third smallest yet second most populated province, comprises 10 District Municipalities, with the KwaJobe community located in the large uMhlabuyalingana District. Early initiatives include support of the Ophansi Clinic in 2008 after the clinic’s steering committee requested assistance to improve this essential healthcare infrastructure. This investment in vital community health will build KwaJobe Community resilience, providing an integral link between conservation and meaningful community benefits.
