Children on Benguerra Island attend primary school locally, at a school serving their villages of Chizungune, Bavene, and Chiringoma. However, for high school and tertiary education, they must travel to Vilanculous, the nearest mainland town with secondary schools and higher education opportunities. This transition requires students to either travel by boat daily or weekly or stay temporarily in Vilanculos during the school term. The journey is often long and challenging, especially during the rainy season, placing both logistical and financial strain on families.
Despite these challenges, access to education in Vilanculous is essential for island children to continue their studies, develop skills, and unlock future career opportunities. Local initiatives and community partnerships are playing a key role in supporting this transition, helping students overcome barriers to learning beyond primary school. Wild Impact and &Beyond are working together to drive long-term improvements at Vilanculos Boarding House.
