Poaching remains a major challenge to conservation in Tanzania, particularly in the Serengeti National Park. While snaring mainly targets species such as wildebeest or zebra, these traps are deadly for other animals within the reserve including lions and elephants.
The Serengeti De-snaring programme is a unique partnership between Serengeti Park Management, Frankfurt Zoological Society and participating tour operators working in the area.
Experienced teams under the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), working with former poachers who bring invaluable knowledge of poaching techniques and hot spots, is a key element of this effective programme. Regular searches are conducted in the most troubled areas of the Serengeti National Park.
Since this project began in 2017, over 80 000 snares have been collected, and hundreds of live animals released from the snares.
