Botswana’s Okavango Delta is a globally significant wetland ecosystem recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its biodiversity and ecological importance. Yet, for many communities living there, like the Nxabe settlement in Shorobe, access to clean, safe and reliable water remains a daily struggle. Nxabe is a remote rural community where water insecurity has long affected livelihoods and health. The settlement is located in a region vulnerable to climate variability, where water sources are often nonexistent during the extended dry season. Without the seasonal water pans, residents rely on unclean water from deep, hand-dug wells or walk over three kilometers to reach the nearest borehole.
