For the settlements of Tsutsubega and Gogomoga, situated alongside a remote section bordering the Okavango Delta, water is as precious as gold. This region is characterised by low rainfall, and the stark reality is that without water their crops cannot grow, and their cattle and other livestock cannot thrive. Desperate for water, unclean sources are relied upon, causing water-borne illnesses which are commonly fatal for young children. Improving access to water is fundamental to the lives and livelihoods of the people in these communities. .
In November 2023, work was completed on four new boreholes, two per settlement: two solar-powered units and two fitted with hand pumps. These complement the two boreholes previously established. The intention is to provide potable water within two km of the 166 outposts in Gogomoga and 128 outposts in Tsutsubega. In addition to the boreholes, this project enabled the distribution of 113 Hippo Water Rollers to facilitate the collection of water.
A new project supporting food security, funded by Travel Elevate, was started in December 2023 to develop our seedling production ability and capacity.
The project will support:
- Appointment of two farming facilitators.
- Establishment of two propagation hubs to harvest seedlings.
- Development of relevant human–elephant co-existence mechanisms to protect farms from elephants.
- Creation of market linkages to enable access for local farmers to sell vegetables.
