Mbirikiri Primary School, established in 2008, is located in the Serengeti District of Tanzania’s Mara Region. The school currently has seven classrooms; however, only five are in use, with two undergoing repairs. The community has also commenced construction of an additional two classrooms to accommodate the growing number of students. Despite these efforts, there remains an immediate demand for extra classrooms and desks to provide a conducive learning environment.
Future Foundations addesses the 4th Sustainable Development Goal which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Children in developing countries are enrolled in schools but infrastructure and resources to meet their needs is lacking. Rural communities suffer most with inadequate facilities, overcrowded classrooms and too few teachers.
Having recognised these truths and embedded them at the heart of the organisation, Wild Impact has been working for three decades to improve the quality of, and access to, education in rural communities in conservation landscapes. Our vision 2030 target is to ensure 80% of final year primary scholars achieve an average greater than 60%.
Wild Impact in partnership with &Beyond started working with the Mbirikiri Community in 2020. Mbirikiri, situated in Tanzania’s Serengeti District within the Mara Region, is a community that has witnessed significant growth and development over the years. Wild Impact’s collaboration with the community, regional government and district stakeholders has focused on the development of the Mbirikiri Primary School, which now includes a pre-school level. However, with enrolment exceeding the available infrastructure, the challenges of overcrowded classrooms and limited resources persist, and will be a continued priority in looking ahead to ensure access to a quality education for all young learners in this community.
