Kilimajuu Primary School is located in Kijini community, in the northern region of Zanzibar Island, Tanzania. The school suffers from the issues of overcrowding and poor infrastructure. However, to meet the Ministry of Education standards and accommodate the growing number of students, additional classrooms and facilities are necessary. Future Foundations addesses the 4th Sustainable Development Goal which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Children in developing countries are enrolled in schools but infrastructure and resources to meet their needs is lacking. Rural communities suffer most with inadequate facilities, overcrowded classrooms and too few teachers.
Having recognised these truths and embedded them at the heart of the organisation, Wild Impact has been working for three decades to improve the quality of, and access to, education in rural communities in conservation landscapes. Our vision 2030 target is to ensure 80% of final year primary scholars achieve an average greater than 60%.
Wild Impact and &Beyond’s Oceans Without Borders (OWB) marine conservation programme was started within the Mnemba Island seascape in 2018. Mnemba Island, located off the northeastern coast of Zanzibar, is renowned for its pristine coral reefs, clear turquoise waters, and diverse marine life. Collaborative initiatives in partnership with local communities, government authorities and regional stakeholders have included coral reef restoration, sustainable tourism practices, local education through workshops and school classes, and enterprise development.
A decline in live coral cover poses a significant threat to local livelihoods, food security, commercial and subsistence fisheries, tourism, and associated enterprises within the Zanzibar Blue Economy. The protection and regeneration of coral reefs is not only critical to marine life but is fundamental to a future in which communities and conservation thrive together.
